Supporting EMERGENCY’s New Children’s Hospital
Donation of several UPS to protect critical medical services at the Children’s Surgical Hospital in Entebbe, Uganda.

The new facility is built on 120,000 m² of land made available by the Ugandan government. It is the second structure built by the African Network of Medical Excellence (ANME), a multinational body designed by EMERGENCY to develop an integrated network of medical centres of excellence across Africa.

The Children’s Surgical Hospital in Entebbe has a capacity of 72 beds, including a 6-bed intensive care unit (ICU). It also incorporates 3 operating theatres, an analysis laboratory, blood bank, pharmacy, administrative and training facilities, and a 42-bed guest house to support patients and families from across Africa.

Founded in 1994, EMERGENCY is a charity that provides free high-quality healthcare to victims of war, poverty, and landmines. It has treated more than 11 million people across 19 different countries.

For this latest project, it called upon the renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano and Studio TAMassociati. The Children’s Surgical Hospital in Entebbe represents a virtuous model for the whole continent of Africa, operating according to the EMERGENCY healthcare model principles of Equality, Quality, and Social Responsibility (EQS).

In such a critical medical environment, it is of vital importance that the sophisticated systems, diagnostic equipment, and operating theatres don’t suffer any interruption or damage due to the poor quality of electrical supplies.

For this reason, Riello UPS enthusiastically agreed to support the project by donating a number of UPS systems to protect the most strategic areas of the building:

  • 2 x 60 kVA Multi Sentry (MST) to back up the operating theatres
  • 125 kVA Multi Sentry (MST) to protect the analysis laboratories and related computer systems
  • 80 kVA Multi Sentry (MST) to support the facility’s diagnostic tools
  • 80 kVA Master MPS (MPT) safeguarding the hospital’s medical gas distribution systems
  • 20 kVA Multi Sentry (MST) overseeing the wider children’s emergency department (CED)

The Multi Sentry units achieve an efficiency of up to 96%, saving 35% of the energy dissipated in a year, while also providing up to 15% more active power than similar UPS available on the market.

While the Master MPS range guarantees maximum protection and power quality for any type of load in an extremely compact footprint. It is ideal for space-restricted locations typically found in medical environments, while it is also able to supply power from generators and MV/LV transformers.
